Service Outage: April 27, 8.00 pm EST to 11.25 pm EST.
Root cause: The current certification expired on April 27. We renewed the certificate on April 17. As part of the renewal, the certification authority (network solutions in our case) should call us to validate and then issue the renewed certificate. Due to the current Covid situation, the validation process did not happen before the certification expiry date. Usually, we are also provided a 30 days period after expiry to make sure validation is completed but that did not happen from Network solutions as well.
When the certificate expired, the certificate was still “in validation” status. It took us 2+ hours to connect and talk to a rep in Network Solution and complete the validation process. Once validation was done, it took 40+ minutes to issue the renewed certificate.
Once the new certificate was applied, the issue was resolved.
Mitigation Steps: We added in our process to call certification authority immediately to complete the validation process. The current certificate is valid for 2 years and this issue will not happen again.
